In the last book review post, I talked about the controversial yet empowering technique of not worrying about your credit card bills for 30 days by putting them in a box and forgetting about them. You can read that post here. He even addresses the skeptic in you who doesn’t think an idea like that will work.

Today, I will review from chapter 8 on to the rest of part two of Jerrol Mundis’ “How to get out of debt, stay out of debt, and live prosperously.” Chapter 8 introduces the spending record. This is a record of where you are spending your money. If you do not know how much you are spending or where all your money is going, you cannot get out of debt.

He talks about keeping a daily, weekly, and monthly record. He addresses those of you who are resistant to the idea of keeping a spending record. But by refusing to keep track of your expenses and even getting mad at the idea of it, you are still in denial about your debt problems.

What you may discover when you start to keep a spending record is that your debt situation is not as bad as you had feared.

Without keeping a spending record, it is unlikely that you will liberate yourself from credit card debt. Mundis advises that he has not known anyone who has gotten out of debt without keeping a spending record. He says that keeping one is a vital step in your debt recovery process.

Chapter 9 is probably going to be the hardest one for most of us. It is the point where we have to cut up and get rid of all our credit cards. For some of us credit cards are an integral part of our lives and the thought of getting rid of them probably mades you shudder. How could you ever live without one? Well look at how you have done with a few…Mundis answers the many common objections people have about not wanting to get rid of their credit cards and he does so in convincing fashion. In rare cases he does say one can live with one credit card but even still he does not advise it.

Next, he moves on to the spending plan which some people would call a budget but it is not a budget. A plan is a detailed scheme to accomplish a goal. “A general doesn’t budget a victory, he plans a victory.”

Chapter 11 is all about couples and family. If you want to get out of debt but your spouse or partner is still in denial, you will have some rough waters ahead. He covers how to deal with a partner in denial and some unusual tactics for dealing with your partner that involves both of you in the bath tub naked.

In the final part of part 2 he talks about revising your spending plan and increasing your income. I would have liked to have seen more about increasing how much money you make in this chapter but it still does provide some useful tips.

In the next post, I will review the final 2 parts which discuss turning around your debt problems and the specific tools and methods you are to use to get out of debt and stay out of debt.

Last time we started reviewing Jerrold Mundis’ book called “How to get out of debt, stay out of debt and live prosperously.” Today I will review part two of the book and reveal an interesting and controversial tactic that I had not read anywhere before. Believe me when I say that your credit card companies will not like you practicing this tactic.

Before I get to that, I wanted to talk a little about the earlier part of part two. It is all about stopping the debt spiral cold. It talks about the concepts of change and how you got into debt “as a result of distorted attitudes and perceptions, which led to destructive behavior patterns.” Change needs to come from new habits and attitudes for any of these debt relief techniques to work.

While it may seem that you are living and working to pay your creditors, you are not their slave. Being in debt is just a temporary situation, even though you may feel like you will never be free from its hold.

Contrary to what you may have heard, there is no debtor’s prison, you will not go to jail if you do not pay your credit card bills. No matter how bad you think your situation is, Mundis says that right now, you are perfectly all right.

While this may sound like New Agey talk, I do subscribe to the belief that our thoughts have a significant impact on our situation and our outlook. If you take the time to realize that you have a roof over your head, clothes to wear and food to eat, you will see that you are in fact alright. There are many people who are in much worse shape than you and I are.

So now the controversial tactic that I was talking about earlier. Mundis calls it “A Month Without Worries” and to me it is pretty powerful and shows you just how much control you really do have when dealing with a mountain of debt when you may think you have none and are at the credit card company’s mercy.

Mundis says to gather all your credit card statements, all your bills, all your threatening creditor communication and put it in a box like you would old photos and forget about them for a month. How would you feel if you had 30 days of freedom from your bills? I know I would feel pretty good. Mundis gives you all the details about how to do it and why to do it and why it is so helfpul. Just this one technique alone would make me feel I got my money’s worth from this book.

When you worry about your bills most of the month and worry about not having enough money to pay them all, getting 30 days free from worry and anxiety about paying your credit cards can truly be a much needed life line.

The next technique talks about making it one day at a time without incurring any new debt. The reason for this is that you cannot get out of debt by borrowing more money. So if you stop debting one day at a time, you can work towards getting out of debt.

Do your best to try and save wherever possible and you can be on your way to getting your credit card bills paid off. Using places like eBay for buying several household items can help you save money in these tough times.
